We offer comprehensive assessments of individuals for diagnostic clarification, treatment planning, disability evaluations, competency to stand trial, and recidivism risk. Neuropsychological evaluations require in-person testing, whereas psychodiagnostic evaluations can be conducted virtually.
Both Dr. Kaplan and Dr. Mahoney are experts on trauma and PTSD. We are willing to provide testimony on risk factors for trauma exposure, retraumatization, trauma recovery, trauma-related psychopathology (e.g., major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, substance use disorders), and common outcomes associated with traumatic experiences.
We are able to provide in-house and virtual trainings and workshops focused on trauma, including trauma-informed care, how to respond appropriately to assault disclosure, and how to formally assess for a diagnosis of PTSD. Our services are not limited to these topics though, and we are happy to provide additional trainings as long as the subject matter is within the limits of our competencies and expertise.
Dr. Stephanie Kaplan received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Idaho State University, where she completed a wide array of clinical practica training involving evidence-based interventions. She completed her predoctoral internship at the VA Central Western Massachusetts Health Care System in Leeds, MA, specializing in treating trauma-related psychopathology (e.g., PTSD, mood and anxiety disorders), and her postdoctoral fellowship at the VA Boston Healthcare System hospital in Jamaica Plain, MA. During her postdoctoral fellowship, she implemented the gold standards of PTSD treatment (i.e., Cognitive Processing Therapy [CPT], Prolonged Exposure [PE]) with both male and female veterans in the VA Boston PTSD Clinic and on the Women’s Trauma & Recovery Team. She also became a Certified CPT Provider within the VA Boston, and has extensive research and clinical experience and expertise in trauma psychology.
Following her postdoctoral fellowship, Dr. Kaplan worked in a child abuse clinic, treating children and adolescents with histories of physical and sexual abuse using Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT; gold standard for childhood PTSD). Following her move to Colorado in 2021, she worked as a behavioral medicine psychologist within an integrated care setting specializing in older adult mental health. Currently, however, she works as a therapist providing exposure-based treatments to children and adolescents with anxiety disorders. Dr. Kaplan is a licensed clinical psychologist in both Massachusetts and Colorado.
Dr. Colin Mahoney received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Idaho State University, where he was extensively trained in evidence-based assessment and intervention practices. He completed his predoctoral internship at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, specializing in behavioral medicine, and his postdoctoral fellowship at the National Center for PTSD within the VA Boston Healthcare System and the Boston University School of Medicine. During both his predoctoral training and postdoctoral fellowship, he completed over 1000 hours of assessment administration along with countless associated hours spent scoring, interpreting, and report writing. He was also deeply involved in studies funded by the Department of Defense to develop and examine novel and existing trauma-related assessment instruments.
Dr. Mahoney is a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Colorado and an Assistant Professor of Trauma Psychology at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). He serves as the Principal Investigator (PI) of the MPWR lab at UCCS, that investigates the psychosocial impact of traumatic experiences on survivors. His specialty and expertise, in both research and clinical practice, is within trauma, PTSD, and substance use disorders and he has published 25 peer-reviewed articles and 3 book chapters in this area. He has conducted hundreds of clinical interviews with survivors of trauma and has been qualified as an expert witness in trauma, PTSD, substance use disorders, and interpersonal violence victim response. He also serves as the clinical supervisor for the Clinical Trauma Assessment rotation within the Department of Psychology at UCCS; Dr. Mahoney supervises psychodiagnostic and neuropsychological evaluations conducted by third and fourth-year Ph.D. students in various clinical settings within the Colorado Springs community.
